Spotlight on Success – Robyn Brown

We are really enjoying meeting with fabulous Graduates of The Beauty Academy as part of our Spotlight on Success campaign. Today we are proud to present Robyn Brown…

Robyn joined us for training back in May 2023 and has gone on to complete a number of courses with The Beauty Academy, attending both our London Kings Cross and Milton Keynes training centres. Robyn has completed our ABT Accredited Courses within:

  • Facial Massage & Skincare
  • Dermaplaning
  • Microneedling
  • Skin Peels
  • LED Light Facial Therapy

She is also due to attend our Highly Defined Brows Course to allow her to introduce yet another exciting new treatment to her beauty business. We asked Robyn how she has found training with our Academy; “I have enjoyed every single one of the courses I’ve completed with TBA. Booking the courses online was quick and easy, and I particularly liked that there are different payment options available to students so you are able to pay over time if need be. I received all of my course documents within a timely manner, as well as the links to my online student portal, where I was able to log in and complete all of my online learning prior to attending my training days. The online learning documents were very educational and they are great to refer back to after completing your course. I really liked the step-by-step facial routine and the supplier & product information sheets which I was able to print off for future reference.”

Speaking of her time in the classroom with us, she said; “I have attended two locations and always felt extremely welcome by the tutors. The training was delivered in an organised manner and the tutors are very knowledgeable within their areas. The tutors are all qualified beauty professionals who share their industry experience and offer ongoing support which I think is really important. During our training days, the tutors also shared lots of information regarding products, suppliers and insurance companies which made things a lot easier for students, as it can seem like a mind field sourcing the right  products and equipment for new treatments. I thoroughly enjoyed training with The Beauty Academy and I have stayed in touch with the students I met on my course; we still contact each other for general industry support!”

We were interested to hear what brought Robyn to the idea of training in beauty; “I was inspired to pursue a career within beauty because there are no limits to what you can achieve! I wanted to find a career where I could continue to grow and develop, both personally and professionally. I wanted to be successful in my career, but I wanted flexibility so I didn’t have to compromise on being a mother.”

“A career in beauty ticked every box, and some! I am excited for what the future holds!”

We asked Robyn why she chose to book with The Beauty Academy. Robyn said “I spent a long time researching different training companies but it was obvious very quickly that The Beauty Academy was coming out on top! They had fantastic 5* reviews online. I liked that courses which can be booked on their own or as part of a package deal, saving you money. One of the courses I attended was the “complete aesthetics package”, which I was able to spread the cost interest free over a period of time.”

“Launching new services can be extremely costly, so being able to spread the cost of the course was important to me as I was still able to invest financially into high quality products and machines, without compromising my training and education.”

Robyn added; “My insurance company is very particular in regards to the course certificate accreditation, and The Beauty Academy providing ABT Accredited Courses solved this for me. It gave me total confidence, knowing I would be receiving top quality training and aftercare.”

Robyn originally launched her beauty business offering lash extensions and other beauty services in 2018. Robyn says of her business launch; “When I first ventured into the beauty industry I had no idea I’d be where I am today – it was only meant to be a “tide-me-over” while my children were small. I was a young mum, and needed to find a job that worked around our young family, so I decided to do a variety of beauty courses which would work well around family life. After completing my courses, I purchased a summer house and worked from my back garden. I became well known in my local area for eyelash extensions and my clientele was grew through personal recommendations.”

“Overtime, I slowly reduced my treatment list as I found that I didn’t enjoy some of the treatments I was offering, I didn’t want that to show through my work. Reducing my treatment list allowed me to take on more lash clients and business boomed. This “tide-me-over” was quickly becoming a career and I was enjoying the freedom and financial income I was receiving from being my own boss.”

However when COVID hit, the beauty and personal care sector were hit hard. Robyn says, “I was absolutely devastated when I had to close my doors. I’d poured my heart and soul into my business. I was unsure if I would be able to claw back everything I had built up and if clients would financially be in a position to receive their much-loved beauty treatments upon re-opening. When the government gave us the go ahead to re-open our doors, I found myself inundated with clients who could not wait to “feel human” once again.”

“In 2023, I decided that I wanted to expand my treatment lists and found myself at The Beauty Academy. I am qualified in a wide variety of beauty treatments, however, I currently offer classic, hybrid and volume lashes. I have completed the “facial massage and skincare” course and the “ultimate aesthetics training package” course with The Beauty Academy this year and am already seeing success offering these new treatments.”

Since completing her training with The Beauty Academy, Robyn has rebranded her successful business based in Hertfordshire – Robyn Brown Aesthetics & Beauty. She was also recently named a finalist in 3 categories for her lash extension treatments in The Lash Awards 2023. She now provides her treatments from a beautiful new salon that exudes luxury and relaxation.

We asked Robyn for her top tips for anyone aspiring to follow in her footsteps and build a new career within beauty…

Robyn said:

  1. Be patient! A successful career in the beauty industry will take time and patience, but it is extremely rewarding. 5 years on, with a global pandemic part of my history, business has never been better and I have just built and opened a brand new purpose built salon which perfectly reflects my business aspirations. Recently, I have been nominated as a finalist in three categories at The Lash Awards 2023 and I am excited to be attending the event in Birmingham this October, which will allow me to network with all of my suppliers and other lash artists within the industry.  The feeling of accomplishment when you see your hard work paying off is a real pinch me moment so stick with it!”
  2. Practice makes perfect! Do not rush your treatments. Take your time to perfect your skills, and use mistakes as a learning curve. Therapists who take their time will have better treatment results and therefore better client retention which is vital to success!”
  3. If I can do it, you certainly can! I was just a young mum who didn’t have any previous industry or business experience, who needed something that worked around family commitments and bought in a little money to help pay our bills. Now, I am a successful business owner, who is working her dream job and living her best life. All I wanted out of life was to be happy in my job and provide my children with a comfortable life, and that’s exactly what my career in the beauty industry has given me. It’s been the best choice I have ever made. If I can do it, anyone can!”

I made a last minute decision to attend the ‘dry manicure and gel polish’ course and so glad I did! The tutor (Donnamarie) was so passionate and inspiring that she gave me the confidence I needed. Everything was well explained and the group was small enough get the best out of the day.
