Client with full lash extensions while a lash technician brushes them through

Ready to take your Russian lashes to the next level?

The Russian Volume lash technique was introduced by Russian lash artists approximately 7 years ago. Since then, Russian Volume lashes have been in high demand and all the while, fanning techniques and synthetic lashes have continued to evolve. Further ultra-thin, light weight lashes (0.03 โ€“ 0.04), optimised lash tools and enhanced lashing techniques have made way for Mega Volume Lashes; 10- dimension and upward fans and lash bouquets! • Should I invest in an E-file?

Should I invest in an E-file?

Manicurist using an electric nail file

Searching for ways to speed up your Nail services? E-filing tools can be a great additional to the majority of Nail treatments, saving you precious time for remove and prep work! If you’re looking for more information on E-filing, look no further! In today’s blog we’ll be sharing the benefits and uses of E-filing and how to get the most out of these tools.

    What is E-filing?

An e-file is an electric tool that nail technicians use to substitute the use of a hand file. It is used to prepare natural nails, shape product, and remove product from the nail. Most e-files will have a base with a motor and a hand piece that connects to a cable. Some e-files need to be plugged in but some you can charge, which is great if you are a mobile technician.ย Just like the different grits of a hand file, an e-file has different bit that do different parts of your nail service.

    Does price matter?

There are many variations of e-files that different companies offer; this will be reflected in the price you pay for it. ย When looking into E-files it’s important to do your research. The cheaper e-files generally have a motor that is a little less powerful than more expensive ones. Most e-files will run at a maximum speed of between 20,000 and 30,000 RPM (rotations per minute), you will never need to use your e-file at these speeds. They have a maximum speed so that you never need to run the motor at its full capacity. This ensures your motor will not burn itself out.

E-file drill bits for manicure and pedicure

    Benefits of E-filingย

There are many benefits to using an e-file in your nail services.

The backwards and forwards motion involved in hand filing can cause repetitive strain syndrome in the wrists. This is known as carpel tunnel syndrome, the carpel tunnel inside your wrist swells and squeezes the nerve causing pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand/grip. Many nail techs are forced to retire through developing this.

Use of an e-file also allows you to provide nail extension treatments more quickly as time can be saved versus use of manual filing, plus traditional nail preparation and nail extension product removal processes alone.

Results achieved using an e-file can be more even and aesthetically pleasing versus use of manual methods and filing.

Where can you incorporate into treatments?

Prep-ย E-files can be used for cuticle work, nail shaping and buffing!

Shaping artificial products-ย For acrylic you need a coarse e-file bit where as Gel you need a medium e-file bit. Most beginners will feel comfortable with the safety bit to start with. As your confidence grows you can move on to the sharp-edged carbide bits.

Product removal- You can use your e-file to remove product from the nail, which is much quicker than buffing the overlay by hand and eliminates the use of harsh chemicals. When removing product, it is advised to use a similar filing pattern used in the shaping process, this will ensure a clear view of the nail plate.

If you’re thinking of investing in an E-filing tool it’s important that you have the relevant training, many insurance companies will require you to have a separate certificate. We offer accredited in classroom and online E-filing courses to support you will your skills.ย

  • What are Quick Dip nails?

    What are Quick Dip nails?

    Manicurist applying acrylic dip powder

Looking for a nail system that lasts longer than Gel Polish? Look no further than Quick Dip nails. Although the Quick Dip trend isn’t new, a recent increase of social posts is rocketing the service, making it a more popular choice for clients and Nail Techs alike. Who doesn’t want a manicure that lasts a full two weeks?

What are Quick Dip/Powder Dip nails?

Sometimes referred to as the ‘Diet Acrylic’ quick dip nail systems are a happy medium between a manicure and acrylics. A simple system that requires a base coat adhesive applied to the tip or natural nail, then while still wet the nail is dipped into the acrylic powder which hardens when the monomer interacts chemically with powders. This process is then repeated 2-3 times to build a strong enhancement. Activator is then applied to harden the nail. A quick buff, polish and voila a perfectly manicured set in less than an hour!

Nail technician preparing a client's nails

What are the benefits Quick Dip/Powder Dip nails?

The ‘Quick Nails’ system enables the nail technician to create beautifully strong nails in less than 1 hour.

This can be used over tips or as natural nail overlays.

Dip systems require fewer tools, no mess and no fuss

How to perform Quick Dip/Powder Dip nails

    1. Prepare the nails with a dry manicure including cuticle work, filing and buffing
    2. Once the nails are prepared apply nail tips if required
    3. Apply base coat/adhesive to the nails
    4. Dip the wet nails into the powder
    5. Tap and brush off excess powder
    6. Repeat process until you achieve desired coverage (usually 2-3 times)
    7. Apply activator to Harden the nail
    8. Buff and polish

How to remove Quick Dip/Powder Dip nails

Quick dip nails should be removed according to the following process:-

    1. Clip the artificial nails to the length of the natural nail below.
    2. File the acrylic layer thin using the 100 grit file, without damaging the natural nail.
    3. Fill a glass dish with pure acetone, and leave the nails to soak for several minutes.
    4. Using a tissue, quickly wipe off the substance that has now softened,. The 180 grit of the file can also be used to cautiously file away the substance.
    5. Once the nails have been removed, the hands should be washed and a manicure treatment provided. For the first few hours following the removal of the acrylic, the nails will feel weak. This sensation will disappear by itself. It is recommended that once the nails have been removed, a nail hardener be used. The nail will then recover more quickly! If the acrylic layer is removed for the application of a new overlay, no manicure treatment should be provided. This will simply make the nails moist and greasy, and the new acrylic layer will not adhere well, and the risk of fungal infection will increase.

Our Online Quick Dip course is the perfect go to for theory and practical application of these systems. Learn at your own pace, in your own time and receive an accredited diploma.ย

Smiling woman at an aesthetics clinic

This week’s blog is all about how to differentiate between the various advanced facial tools at our disposal. • Should I invest in Microneedling?

    Should I invest in Microneedling?

    Client receiving a microneedling treatment

Medical microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, has been widely used in aesthetic medicine for many years. The first recorded use of microneedling was in 1905 by German dermatologist Ernst Kromayer. He experimented with various-sized dental burs mounted on motor-driven flexible cord equipment and used this technique to treat scars, birthmarks and hyperpigmentation.

By 1995, a new technique was discovered by Dr Desmond Fernandes for the treatment of wrinkles and scars with the use of hypodermic needles. Around the same time, Dr Fernandes developed a small needle stamp to induce collagen production. This later led to the development of our modern micro-needling devices.

    Collagen induction therapy skin diagram

What are the benefits of Micro needling?ย

Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. The pinpricks from the procedure causes slight injury to the skin and the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue. This new skin tissue is, in turn, more even in tone and texture. Because the needles used in this treatment are so small and penetrate very shallowly into the skin, microneedling is generally not painful. However, it stimulates your bodyโ€™s natural wound response, forcing your skin to heal. The treatments biggest appeal is the minimal downtime, normally within 24-48 hours.

    • Helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
    • Reduce the appearance of acne scaring.
    • Refines large pores.
    • Helps products penetrate deeper into the epidermis.
    • Rejuvenates and firms the skin.
    • Brightens the skin through application of products.
    • Can reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
    • Hyper pigmentation.
    • Rosacea
    • Hair restoration

Woman using a derma roller on her face

    Derma roller or Derma pen?ย

Skin-needling can be a very personal preference, however more experience will generally leave therapist craving the digital skin needling pen. The skin needling pen can adjust the needle depth and speed for different skin types, thicknesses and also conditions. The puncture wounds with the digital pen are generally finer and can produce more punctures and can be less painful in the skin.

The digital skin needle pen (dermapen) can be expensive as a first purchase but can work out much more cost effective as the needle heads generally work out a few pounds dependant on where you purchase them. They can be purchased from a 12 pin to 36 pin. The 36 pin can feel more comfortable for the client as the surface area is larger.

Derma skin rollers can range from ยฃ10 to ยฃ35 per roller depending upon the supplier. The rollers are available in a variety of needle length options.

Derma skin rollers create a cone like shape in the skin so can be more painful for the client and also can create more trauma in the skin.

    How much can I charge?

Micro needling treatment costsย can vary depending on the area that is being treatment, the products and the combination of other modalities such as peels and LED light therapy. Treatments would usually start at around ยฃ150 per session, typically clients need 3-5 sessions to treat a more advanced concern such as acne scarring but may see improvement after the first session. Many clinics and skin centres will offer a consultation prior to a treatment session for the therapist to assist the treatments needed and provide the client with a quote for their services, including the amount and frequency of the treatments. Microneedling for larger areas of scarring such as areas of the body for scarring and stretch marks can start at ยฃ250 per session ranging to ยฃ450 for a longer session time.

    How do I train?ย

  • Ultimate guide to Kim K Lashes

Ultimate guide to Kim K Lashes

Celebrity at a red carpet event with a full, wispy lash look

What is the Kim K Lash look

The Kim K Lash look focusses on creating a wispy, spiked look.ย It’s a style that’s becoming increasingly popular with clients. This look is designed around applying longer lashes at equally distanced points along the map, this creates a fuller, fluffier look. Ideal for clients with smaller eyes and a high set brow, this map can create the illusion of larger eyes. This is a map that benefits from a lot of practice!

To create the perfect Kim K look the key to master a wispy lash map. You will need to determine which lengths and where to place the spiked lashes to create an even volumed lash. Let’s take a close look at the method..

Prepare your equipment:ย You will need your usual lash equipment such as eye pads and lash mapping pen in addition you may want to have some tape at hand for use during the application. An ideal tweezer would be a multifunctional tweezer that can be used with Classic and Volume extensions.

    Wispy lash set diagram

Before you begin your Kim K Map:ย Following your clients natural lashes lash line and evenly mark the areas you will be applying your spikes, start at the peak points to create a frame for your map. When creating your spikes it can work best to create various lengths for a more natural/wispy result. Once you have mapped where to apply your spikes we would suggest applying these first prior to filling in the gaps with the following lashes.

Close-up of 5D volume eyelash extensions

Filling in the gaps:ย Once you have applied your spikes, you’re ready to start filling in the lashes. The highest point of your lash map should be the middle or outer corner of the lash line, depending on whether you would like more of a foxy look! Professional recommendations would be to use 2 to 3mm shorter volume lashes to attach between spikes. If you choose to use 11 and 12mm for spikes in inner corners, the filling lashes in this area should be 9 and 10mm.

Remember that practice makes perfect and you may not create the perfect set to start with, stick with it and the more you do the more confident you will become! If you have a lash map you would like to share tag us on your socials @thebeautyacademyukย

  • Sculpting your Dreams

    Sculpting your Dreams

Once you’ve mastered the basics of working with acrylic to create tip and overlay nail extensions, you will soon want to progress your skills to ensure you are offering the best possible nail service to your clients. Not only will it ensure your clients are dazzled by the results you achieve and bring new clients in through word of mouth, but you will save yourself time and stand miles ahead of the competition. All simply though learning to sculpt and use an electric nail file. We give you the lowdown on what they are and why you’ll benefit…

    What is Sculpting?

Sculpting with acrylic is a method of creating nail extensions using โ€˜nail formsโ€™ as a platform to create the tip. This is then layered with acrylic to create a strong but tip-free extension. Traditional acrylic extension involves the use of plastic false tips & glue, overlaid with acrylic on top to give the extension strength. The sculpting technique can be kinder to natural nails as there is no glue, no tip is needed with a sculpted enhancement.

How long do sculpted nails last?

    2-3 Weeks

    Benefits of Sculpting

    • No adhesive to break down over time.
    • Can be thinner than with tips as you donโ€™t have the bulk of the tip under the product.
    • Once mastered, sculpting is generally faster to apply than a properly applied and blended tip.
    • Generally better for nail biters because the moisture in the nails of biters can break down the adhesive and also the thick skin on the edge of a nail biters fingers will often push the tip off the nail or create a โ€œski jumpโ€ look to the nail.

    What is an E-File?

An electric file (formerly called a โ€œdrillโ€) is a tool used by nail technicians to speed up, streamline, or make easier some nail services. The electric file allows nail technicians to file or finish areas of the nail that are hard to reach (for example, under the free edge of a newly created sculpted nail)

    Are electric nail files safe?

As long as itโ€™s done properly and with the right tools, an electric file on the natural nail can be just as safe as a regular nail file. They can be used to gently push back the cuticle, exposing any dead excess skin which can be more comfortable than use of cuticle pushers.

Itโ€™s the tech, not the tool.

E-files often get a bad rep. When we see pictures of rings of fire, nail plate burns, and injured skin we assume itโ€™s the evil e-file at work. In truth, an e-file really canโ€™t do any damage without a nail tech wielding it. The big question is how can nail techs learn to use an e-file properly? Well, itโ€™s much like learning to drive a car. It takes proper instruction through an accredited course and careful practice. Youโ€™re going to have an accident here and there, especially in the beginning, but the goal is to learn and improve.

    Benefits of E-Filing

    • Reduces risk of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) for the technician as takes the hard work out of filing
    • Saves time so technicians can fit more clients in and clients can have quicker, more convenient appointments
    • Boosts earning potential as more clients in your working hours equals more money

  • The Magic of E-Filing

    The Magic of E-Filing

Once nail salons are able to reopen (hopefully in August), we’re certain you wonderful nail techs will be packed out with clients wanting to restore their nails to former glory. We can imagine some of the nail extension horrors you may encounter and clever client scheduling will be key to fitting everyone in. But what else can you do to speed up your nail treatments to maximise your earning potential while additional safety measures are in place? Our blog this week looks at E-Filing…

    What is E-Filing?

It is surprising to hear how many nail techs are not fully aware of e-filing and how it works. E-Filing is use of an electric nail file to speed up the time taken working on nail extensions. It can be used on both acrylic and UV Gel nail extensions to help finish and refine the product, to help with speeding up a maintenance or removal treatment such as to reduce the length of the extensions, take our excess bulk when rebalancing and to help with product removal (usually alongside use of acetone soaking). Experienced nail techs may also use an electrical file on natural nail plates (often called a Russian manicure), although specialist advanced training is required for this and not all insurers will cover this.

E-Filing helps to reduce the amount of manual filing required to speed up your treatments, give more even finish for better quality nail results and can help to reduce the risk to the nail technician long term of an RSI (repetitive strain injury) or aggravating of conditions like Carpal tunnel or arthritis. Quicker treatments allows you to fit in more clients so boost profitability but is also great for time pressured clients, who often want a quick and effective treatment.

Can anyone train to use an E-File?

We offer courses in E-Filing which can be completed through our Online Student Portal and are accredited by IPHM. The course teaches you to utilise an electric nail file when working on acrylic or hard gel nail extensions. We do not cover use on a natural nails as most clients prefer use of manual files on natural nails for a safer, more comfortable treatment. We will also soon be launching a Classroom based training option. The E-Filing courses are suitable for anyone who has completed a recognised training course in Acrylic or UV Gel Nail Extensions and ideally also within Manicure & Pedicure. If you are looking to train within these skills also, you may wish to look at our Online Nail Training course packages, Virtual Academy Nail Courses or Classroom based training. The courses are suitable for those recently qualified or who have been working within nails for some time.

  • Know Your Nails

    Know Your Nails

With so many nail treatments to learn, it can be really confusing as to what to offer and why. Our blog breaks down the best nail treatments and the benefits; to help you decide which to learn and to promote them to your clients…

    The Staple Manicureโ€ฆ

Everyone loves a manicure, fresh and smooth natural nails and skin. All great nail extensions start with proper care of the natural nails so manicures are also great for use following removal of or when on a break from nail extensions. Manicures are great for those trying to grow their natural nails, in the winter months when extreme weather can dry and dull the skin and nails or indeed before a special occasion or holiday. Using basic products and a traditional air-drying polish, you can achieve incredible results although it can take time and repeated treatments to achieve the best results if nails are damaged or particularly dry / brittle. Recommended to be carried out every 3-4 weeks (or more often if traditional polish is applied, which can chip with time and wear).

    Main Benefits

+ Suitable for all clients, both male and female and of all ages

+ Less contra-indications to a manicure versus nail extensions and the benefits of improving nail health and growing own nails can outweigh quick fixes with extensions

+ Less cost and upkeep to maintain results versus nail extensions

+ A wide range of traditional, low cost polishes on the market and offer the option to retail for home use

+ Popular all year round, can be enhanced further in winter with luxury aspects such as warm paraffin or heated mitts and mask

    The Perfect Pedicureโ€ฆ

A great additional service to provide alongside manicures, caring for the skin and nails of the feet. So many clients have work or hobbies that keeps them on their feet, so it is a popular treatment to offer all year round but especially around holiday season (who doesnโ€™t love fresh polish on toes for the beach) or for weddings and proms. A great treatment to add into your packages, even for those who usually have nail extensions on fingers. Treatments typically take around an hour and are recommended every 3-6 weeks to maintain results.

    Main Benefits

+ Suitable for all clients, both male and female and of all ages

+ A great add on nail service for any nail tech to offer as part of packages or as a standalone treatment

+ A great treatment for holistic therapists to offer alongside massage treatments

+ A great way of retailing home use products to maintain the results

+ Popular all year round, can be enhanced further in winter with luxury aspects such as warm paraffin or heated booties and mask

    Good Olโ€™ Acrylicโ€ฆ

It has been around for decades and is one of the most popular nail extension systems in use. Using a powder and liquid applied in combination as a small bead applied to the nail surface, to overlay a false tip to give instant additional nail length and an enhanced look. A full set usually takes around an hour to apply with practice and can last 2-3 weeks before requiring maintenance (infilling the regrown natural nail area and rebalancing the nail shape).

    Main Benefits

+ Quick, cheap system to work with. No lamps required to set the nails so great for mobile technicians.

+ Durable, hard-wearing system good for those who want nail extensions but have previous damage to nails such as reformed nail biters, those who do a lot with their hands (horse riders, sports players etc).

+ Lots of acrylic powder colours available allowing the system to be used for creative results or just a classic French look

Beautiful woman hands with rose, isolated on white

    Trusty UV / LED Gelโ€ฆ

A newer system than Acrylic, it has become popular as it offers a more natural looking nail extension system that is also easier to work with (doesnโ€™t air dry, but only sets when youโ€™re ready, when you cure under a UV or LED lamp). Also without the vapour of Acrylic due to light curing so better for those who work in less well-ventilated work areas or mobile within clientโ€™s homes. Can be applied over tips to extend natural nails or indeed over natural nails alone to give greater enhanced strength to the nails than say, a gel polish. Typically lasts 2-3 weeks before requiring infill to the regrowth area of the natural nail and rebalancing of the nail shape.

    Main Benefits

+ Low odour unlike acrylic so great for mobile use or where ventilation may not be optimal

+ Flexible, natural-looking system that is great for those wanting extensions for special occasions such as weddings

+ Easy to master as system only sets once light-cured allowing you to tweak nails until you are happy with the finish

+ Product is ready mixed in pots so easy to store and transport, less risk of spilling as with acrylic liquid for example. No need to master product ratios unlike with acrylic.

    Versatile Gel Polishโ€ฆ

Gel Polish has been around for a while now and is well established, despite being one of the newest nail treatments available. It is quick and easy to learn to apply, with a wide range of brands now available to suit all budgets and in a huge range of colours to suit every client. Gel polish is quick to apply, typically taking only 30-45 minutes to apply to fingers and/or toes and provides a chip-free finish for up to 2-3 weeks. Products go a long way and are dry and ready to go once the topcoat has been cured meaning little wastage making it a profitable treatment. Gel polish should be completely removed around 2-3 weeks after application and either a manicure to refresh the nails or reapplication can be immediate.

    Main Benefits

    + Quick, easy to apply

+ Profitable service suitable for a wide range of clients

+ Great for those who want to grow their natural nails and donโ€™t want the hassle of nail extensions

+ Suitable for those who want a more natural look but still a polished finish

+ Long lasting, chip free polish and high shine finish. Allow you to be creative and offer nail art within the gel easily too.

+ Products available for all budgets and price points

+ UV and LED lamps have come a long way, now much smaller so easily portable for mobile nail techs

So there you have it, a brief run down of the most popular nail services available. Itโ€™s easy to see how starting with the basics of manicure and pedicure can then lead on to offering either one or both nail extension systems or indeed simply sticking with gel polish. Itโ€™s worth noting that gel polish can also be applied over both UV and acrylic nail extensions allowing for a really top class nail finish and extra revenue for nail techs. You can also see how the maintenance required to upkeep nail treatments easily allows you to build a loyal, regular client base.
